Flock cameras on your route
There is no practical way to drive around a network of 127,344 plate readers, and nothing about being recorded is unlawful. What is achievable is awareness: knowing which readers sit on your route, which way each faces, and getting a warning before you reach one.
Start with the honest answer
People search for how to avoid these cameras. The truthful response is that you mostly cannot, and it is worth explaining why rather than pretending otherwise.
There are 127,344 documented plate readers in the United States, concentrated exactly where you have to drive: subdivision entrances, main arterial roads, highway ramps, shop car parks. In a well-covered metro area there is frequently no route between two points that passes none of them. Around 24,000 of the documented readers sit outside any city boundary at all, on the county roads and interstate approaches that a "back roads" detour would use.
It is also worth being clear that being recorded is not an offence and avoiding a camera is not one either. This is a privacy question, not an enforcement one — see plate readers vs speed cameras. Nothing here is about evading law enforcement, and we would not publish it if it were.
What awareness actually gets you
1. You learn your own exposure
Most people have no idea how many readers they pass in a week. The number is usually far higher than they guess, and seeing it is the point. It turns an abstract debate into a figure about your own commute.
2. You learn that proximity is not capture
A plate reader is a fixed camera aimed one way. Passing behind one records nothing. Around 95% of documented US cameras (121,036 of 127,344) have a recorded facing direction, so this is knowable rather than guessable — and the gap between "cameras passed" and "cameras that could see you" is usually large.
3. You can be specific with your local officials
ALPR contracts are approved in public council meetings and come up for renewal. "I counted 34 readers between my house and my child's school, run by four different operators" is a materially different comment than "I don't like the cameras". Your town page gives you the count, the brands and the operators.
4. You can file a records request that goes somewhere
Requests fail when they are vague. Knowing the specific camera, road, and time makes a request answerable — see did a camera photograph my car.
How to see your route in the app
- Open the Map tab and pan along the route you normally drive. Red pins are Flock Safety; amber are other brands.
- Zoom to street level so the view cones appear. Now you can see which readers face your direction of travel and which face the opposite carriageway.
- Pull up Area Stats for a count and a brand breakdown of the whole corridor.
- Arm alerts in the Alerts tab and set a warning distance between 200 m and 1.5 km. You will get a notification before each reader, and a second one if you enter a camera's field of view.
- Check History after a week. It logs every reader you passed, with a "likely captured" marker where the geometry says a read was probable.
The database lives on your phone and your position is compared against it locally. Your route is never uploaded, which is rather the point of a tool like this.
