What does a Flock camera look like?
A Flock Safety camera is a compact dark grey or black rectangular box, roughly the size of a shoebox, mounted about 4 metres up a slim pole. Most have a small solar panel above them and a cylindrical lens aimed at one direction of traffic. They carry no police markings and usually no visible signage.
The physical description
The standard Flock Safety unit — the model most commonly installed on public roads — has a consistent look:
- Body: a rectangular housing about 25–30 cm long, dark grey or black, with softly rounded corners.
- Pole: a slim, unbranded pole roughly 3.5–4.5 m tall, much thinner than a streetlight column. Often it is the only thing on that pole.
- Solar panel: a small rectangular panel mounted above or beside the camera, usually angled south. This is the giveaway. It lets the unit be installed anywhere with no wiring, which is why they appear on verges and medians with no other infrastructure.
- Lens: a black cylindrical housing on the front, aimed at one direction of one road — not sweeping, not rotating.
- Antenna: a short stub for the cellular link that uploads reads.
- Markings: generally none. No police livery, no agency name, and in most jurisdictions no warning sign.
Where they are mounted
Position is as recognisable as the hardware. Look for them at:
- Entrances and exits of residential subdivisions and gated communities
- Approaches to major intersections, set back 50–150 m from the junction
- Entry and exit lanes of shopping-centre and big-box retail car parks
- On- and off-ramps of divided highways
- Bridges and other natural choke points
The logic is throughput: a plate reader is worth installing where every vehicle entering or leaving an area must pass it. If you can only leave your neighbourhood one of two ways, those two points are where the cameras go.
What it is not
Several roadside devices get mistaken for plate readers:

| Red-light camera | Much larger, mounted on a heavy mast arm over the junction itself, usually with a visible flash unit and a warning sign. |
| Speed camera | Often a boxy grey cabinet at kerb height, or a marked van. Frequently signposted, because most states require it. |
| Traffic-count sensor | Small, points down at the road surface rather than along it, and has no solar panel. |
| Traffic-signal detector | Mounted on the signal mast arm, aimed at the stop line a few metres away, not down the road. |
| Utility or weather sensor | No lens housing. |
The distinction matters legally as well as practically. A red-light or speed camera exists to issue you a citation. A plate reader records that your vehicle passed a point at a time, and stores it. See Flock camera vs speed camera.
The other brands look different
Flock Safety is the largest operator but not the only one. Of the 127,344 plate readers documented in the US, 104,883 are Flock Safety — about 82%. The remaining 22,000 come from Motorola Solutions, Genetec, Axis Communications, Leonardo/ELSAG, Rekor, Neology and others, and many look nothing like the Flock unit. Some are mains-powered boxes bolted to existing signal gantries; some are built into streetlights.

How to confirm one in the app
- Open the Map tab and find your position.
- Zoom in until the view cones appear.
- Compare the cone direction with the camera you are looking at. If the cone points down the lane the unit faces, it is the same device.
- Tap the pin to see the recorded brand, operator, compass bearing, and the date a volunteer last verified it in person.
If the camera you are looking at is not on the map, it has not been recorded yet. Adding it takes a few minutes and improves every map built on the dataset.
